The town of Hammerfest lies at a latitude of 70.6°N, and enjoys the midnight sun from 17 May to 28 July. During this time, the sun never dips below the horizon, and daylight prevails around the clock. But clear skies are obviously needed to see the sun shining all night.

Total darkness prevails from 22 November to 21 January, with nothing more than a kind of twilight for a few hours in the middle of the day.

The aurora borealis is the Latin name for the northern lights – streams of charged particles emitted by the sun which hit the upper atmosphere in a zone around the magnetic North Pole.

This phenomenon can be observed on dark nights with clear skies between August and April, and is at its most intense from 22.00 to 24.00.
